Why Pinoy creativity stands out
Redeemer Homeless Mission’s goal goes beyond survival—it’s using art and nature to help children heal and grow.
Camille Dowling’s mission to serve the homeless began with a simple act of kindness.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines, her small bakery and popsicle shop in Quezon City, Popburri, was left with goods unsold. Instead of letting food go to waste, she shared it with the homeless, sparking a journey that grew far beyond her entrepreneurial goal.
What started out as a simple act of kindness for the homeless community quickly grew into feeding and sheltering those in need. “The first night, it was nine people, then it became 26, and then it just kept rising,” she recalls. At its peak, Popburri housed 72 people each night—repurposing every inch of its space, including an unfinished building out back. However, despite efforts to maintain health protocols, the shelter had to close after nine days due to lack of government permits.
But that didn’t stop Camille.
The next year, she and her team continued their feeding program, sustained by donations of generous friends and family. Through it all, Camille saw the power of working together—volunteer efforts sustaining an initiative that benefits many from the homeless community.
Out of sharing, Redeemer Homeless Mission was born, and Camille’s vision for the foundation has since grown.
Nurturing minds through creativity & nature
Nestled within a quiet community in Tinambac, Camarines Sur, Redeemer offers open spaces where homeless kids can garden and swim at the beach. For Camille, outdoor activities enable the children to deepen their connection to themselves, each other, and the world around them, fostering a sense of calm and personal growth overall.
Camille’s focus is more than just survival. She’s committed to helping children discover their potential through creative learning programs—an advocacy that Clay supports and believes can create positive change.
At the heart of the mission is Camille’s belief in transformation. Many of the children at Redeemer have faced unimaginable hardships, but through creative outlets like arts and crafts and storytelling, they’ve developed practical problem-solving skills to navigate their daily challenges. Painting and drawing aren’t just artistic pursuits—they serve as opportunities for healing trauma while inspiring the kids to be resourceful. “They have to constantly put fires out and get things done. Those take a very innate level of thinking outside the box,” Camille shares.
She also encourages reading, introducing the kids to books like the Narnia series. “Often we ask them to sleep over because reading is not a one-week thing; it takes real commitment and a culture,” she says. Without distractions like social media, reading is further encouraged, as the children fully connect with the natural environment surrounding the shelter.
Sparking an inner transformation
One of the most powerful moments in Camille’s work is what she calls “the switch”—the point when a child realizes they’re capable of more than they’ve ever imagined. It’s a profound shift in self-perception where a child goes from feeling helpless to empowered. Everything then changes: they become confident, motivated, and eager to learn.
Witnessing this transformation, Camille says, is the most rewarding for her. “Once they get to that point, they’re always here [at the shelter]. They always want to learn, read, and talk to people because they know that they have something to contribute to the world.”
At Redeemer Homeless Mission, creativity isn’t just a hobby—it’s a lifeline. It offers children hope, resilience, and a belief in their ability to build a better future for themselves. It allows them to shift from survival mode to a mindset of growth and possibility.
